![]() ![]() Scrooge's signature pogo jump using his cane can now be activated by simply pressing the attack button in the air, though purists can also toggle on the original controls to hold both down and attack. While the life structure is a holdover from the NES original's brutal difficulty, other concessions have been made to make the game more accessible. With DuckTales Remastered, Wayforward attempted to balance authenticity and nostalgia with trying to offer an original experience. The remake also uses the same repetition through lives and game overs, but it feels more tedious since there is now already a degree of backtracking built into each level. This puts DuckTales Remastered in an odd position, since the game's original challenge relied on players getting better through repeating each level when they ran out of lives. There is even a Metroid-style map to help keep track of the next collectable's location. The NES original had some degree of this in its Moon level, but DuckTales Remastered expands the idea to be a central game mechanic. The game's many secret rooms have also been given the same treatment, giving veteran players a whole new reason to explore every nook and cranny. The updates include anything from several extra floors added to the UFO in the Moon level or extended sections riding the minecart in Transylvania and the African Mines. Players who devoted a lot of time to playing DuckTales on the NES will notice that some paths have been moved around or closed off entirely, while new paths that never existed before expand the size of the original maps. While Scrooge and his gang still travel to the five locations from the original game, each level has an updated layout. Ironically, this gives the environments a more flat presentation, with dull textures that look lifeless compared to the animated characters.ÄuckTales Remastered does much more than simply slap a fresh coat of paint on the classic NES game though.Ä®xploration now takes a much more prominent role, as players need to backtrack through parts of the level to collect trinkets that will unlock the path ahead. While the characters are gorgeous 2D sprites, the puzzling choice was made to render the levels in full 3D. The soundtrack is also every bit as memorable as fans remember, with new recordings of each level's theme that are hard not to hum along with. Those voices are put to extensive use through tons of new dialog and cutscenes, giving a story and context to the game's globe-hopping adventure with a touch of that classic Disney charm. ![]()
